Recently TikTok launched an initiative as a pilot program called #tiktokresumes giving opportunities for both job seekers and employers to connect via video resume. And guess what? It hit the news and the submission period has ended soon after.
“TikTok Resumes is officially open and accepting TikTok video resumes. We’re humbled to be able to partner with some of the world’s most admired and emerging brands as we pilot a new way for job seekers to showcase their experiences and skillsets in creative and authentic ways.” Nick Tran, Global Head of Marketing at TikTok
TikTok Resumes allows job seekers to create video CVs and apply for jobs in-app to companies such as Shopify, Target, and Chipotle Mexican Grill.
The feature is only available in the US market at the moment but could expand globally.
Despite the fact that the general resume building/video or application process seems to be cool, simple, and fast for the job seekers especially for Millennials and Gen Z (50% of TikTok’s global audience is under the age of 34), but that might not be the case for the other demographic cohorts and employers. Though it is worth giving it a second thought as there is a massive potential in this while room for improvement.
Let me tell you why;
Initially, It is just a pilot program to check whether it is product-market-fit. So it is far from a mature product that required a lot of iterations down the road.
There is a huge possibility in video application in the future as the video content is getting more traction, simpler to provide, watch and examine.
Of course, it all depends on the medium and the type of the content itself but look at the general trends between newspapers, blogs, youtube content, podcasts and more.
TikTok proved to be more than just a simple social media app. It is an ecosystem of creators, shoppers, and brands. Let's just see TikTok from a different perspective as it is more of a shorter version of Youtube.
Ultimately, critics see the pitfalls as the video application can bring up concerns such as favoritism and biased hiring decisions. Video resumes are not yet ready to be parsed, scrutinized, and matched with recruiting software.
However, it is still a great platform for employer branding and sourcing passive candidates as almost 95% of the market is comprised of passive candidates.
So let’s give TikTok Resumes a chance. Video resumes may just be here to stay as a candidates’ initial introduction to an employer they want to work for.
